Beach and seafront wedding venues in Spain

A Spanish beach wedding is rarely on the beach: the sand is public, the law is particular, and the sun does not go down until nine. It is a terrace above the water, a beach club closed for the night, a hotel on the bay or an estate behind the dunes. 17 of the venues we list are on or beside the sea. Here they are, with what each one costs and when the day should start.

The three kinds of seaside venue

The beach club. A private stretch of sand or deck with its own bar, kitchen and licence, closed to the public for your night. The price is usually a package per head for food and drink with a minimum spend, and the music hours are the town's. This is the Ibiza model.

The seafront hotel. Rooftops, terraces and pools over the water, with the beds built in and a package for the dinner. The easiest way to put a large guest list by the sea with everyone sleeping on site.

The coastal estate. A finca or a fortress with the sea below it rather than in front of it: private, late, and priced as a stay. The ceremony has the view; the beach is a walk.

The law on the sand

Spanish beaches are public domain, managed by the coastal authority and the town hall. A ceremony on the sand needs the ayuntamiento's permission for the structures, the hours and the sound, and some towns refuse it altogether in high season. None of that applies to a venue's own terrace or a beach club with a licence, which is why almost every "beach wedding" in Spain happens a few metres above the beach. The legal marriage is a separate matter for foreign couples; the legal guide covers it.

Timing, wind and heat

The sea decides three things. The ceremony time, which is late: 7pm in July on the Balearics, a little earlier in September. The wind, which on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia can be a daily event in the afternoon and drop by evening; ask the venue which way the terrace faces and what it does with the levante. And the heat, which the sea moderates: a seafront venue in August is workable where an inland estate is not, which is why the coast is the summer answer in southern Spain. The Ibiza, Mallorca and Andalusia pages give each region's season.

Questions couples ask us

Can you get married on the beach in Spain?

You can hold your ceremony there; you cannot usually hold the legal one there. Spanish beaches are public, so a ceremony on the sand needs the town hall's permission and is almost always symbolic, with the legal marriage done at home. What the venues on this list offer is the next thing along: a private terrace, a beach club or a seafront garden with the sea as the backdrop and the licence already in place.

How much does a beach wedding venue in Spain cost?

Across the 16 seaside venues we list that publish a from-price, the figures run from €5,000 to €74,000. 5 state that the price includes catering and drinks, which is the beach-club and hotel habit; the seafront estates price the house and the stay instead.

Which part of Spain is best for a beach wedding?

Ibiza has 9, Mallorca has 3, Andalusia has 1, Barcelona has 3, Alicante has 1 of the 17 seaside venues we list. Ibiza has the beach clubs and the sunsets; Mallorca the coves and the fortress on the bay; Andalusia the Atlantic beaches near Vejer and Tarifa, where the light is the whole point.

What time should a seaside ceremony be?

Later than you think. In June and July the sun sets after 9pm on the Spanish coast and the sand is hot until 6. The venues here hold ceremonies at 6.30 to 7.30pm, the drinks through the sunset, and dinner after dark; a Spanish beach wedding is an evening, not an afternoon.
