Castle and historic-house wedding venues in Spain

Spain has thousands of castles and almost none of them can be hired for a wedding, which makes the ones that can a short, valuable list. We list 4 castles and fortresses and 12 historic houses, palaces and manors that host weddings. Here they are, with capacities, beds and published prices.

Why castles are rare, and what that means

Most Spanish castles belong to the state, a town or the Church and are opened as monuments, not venues. The ones that host weddings are private restorations: a Catalan castell kept by one family, a fortress on the Mallorcan coast turned into a hotel, a castle estate on the Empordà plain. Because they are few, their dates go early and their licences are strict; because they are old, the rain plan and the music hours are decided by stone walls and neighbours rather than by the owner's goodwill.

By region, Barcelona has 12, Mallorca has 2, Castilla-La Mancha has 1. Catalonia is the castle country of the collection, as it is of Spain.

What a historic building changes

The rooms are what they are. A great hall seats what it seated in 1480. Ask for the indoor seated capacity separately from the headline figure, and ask where 150 people eat if it rains.

Sound. Thick walls keep music in; open courtyards let it out over a village. The licence hours and where the band can play are the two questions, and the answers differ by terrace.

Access. Castles are on hills. Confirm vehicle access to the door, lighting on the path at midnight, and a step-free route for anyone who needs one.

Photography. The reason you chose it. Ask when the walls catch the light and plan the ceremony for it; in a Spanish summer that is later than you think.

The collection by region puts these beside the fincas and masías, and the by-budget hub sorts every priced venue into its band.

Questions couples ask us

Are there castle wedding venues in Spain?

Yes, though fewer than the country's castle count suggests, because most Spanish castles are state monuments or ruins rather than estates you can hire. We list 4 castles and fortresses that host weddings, and 12 more historic houses, palaces and manors with the same age and presence.

How much does a castle wedding in Spain cost?

Across the 15 castles and historic houses here that publish a from-price, the figures run from €3,000 to €28,000. The spread is about the model, not the building: a medieval castell priced for the day sits at the bottom, a fortress hotel or a manor sold as a three-night stay with food at the top. Each venue page says what its figure covers.

Can guests sleep in the castle?

13 of the 16 state how many it sleeps on site, up to 130. The castles that are hotels sleep the most; the medieval castells often sleep only the couple, with the guest list in the nearest town.

Can we have the legal ceremony at a castle?

7 of the 16 state on record that it is licensed for marriage. For a foreign couple the civil route still depends on residency, so most hold a symbolic ceremony in the castle and marry legally at home; the legal guide explains the options.
