The timeline of a wedding day in Spain

A Spanish wedding day starts later, runs longer and ends later than almost any other in Europe, because the country keeps Central European Time and the summer sun sets after nine. This guide runs the day hour by hour, gives sunset by month and region so you can plan backwards from it, and shows how a three-day weekend fits around the day.

Why the day is late

Spain sits on the same clock as Berlin while lying as far west as London, so its evenings are long: in June the sun sets around 9.30pm on the Balearics and not much earlier in Andalusia. Add summer heat, which peaks between three and six in the afternoon, and the shape of the day follows. The ceremony waits for the light to soften, the drinks are the sunset, dinner starts in the dark, and the party is the night. Spanish families would call that a normal evening.

The day, hour by hour: a June Saturday

Morning. Slow. Breakfast for the guests sleeping on site, a swim, the hair and make-up from late morning. Nothing is scheduled before lunch and the venue is setting up.

2pm. A light lunch for the wedding party, in the shade. The heat is building and the afternoon is for getting ready.

6pm. Guests arrive. Cold drinks and shade; the terrace faces the lowering sun.

6.45pm. The ceremony, thirty to forty minutes, in the olive grove, the courtyard or on the terrace. Still warm, no longer hot, the light going gold.

7.30pm. Drinks and canapés through the sunset. This is the part of a Spanish wedding guests remember, and it runs an hour and a half.

9.15pm. Dinner, as the sky goes dark. Spanish wedding dinners are long: three or four courses, speeches between them, two to three hours at the table.

11.45pm. The first dance and the party. An open bar runs to a fixed hour; ask the venue what its licence allows and what an extra hour costs.

2 to 3am. The end, where the licence says. Late-night food at one, chocolate con churros or a burger van, is the Spanish custom and the thing guests mention.

The same day in October

Shift everything two hours earlier. Sunset is around 7.30pm, so the ceremony moves to 4.30 or 5pm, drinks run to dusk, and dinner starts at about 7.30. The party ends at the same hour; the evening is simply longer. Spring runs between the two.

The weekend around the day

32 of the 55 venues we list sleep twelve or more on a minimum of two nights, which turns the day into a weekend. The shape is settled: a welcome dinner on the Friday, informal and outdoors; the wedding on Saturday as above; a long lunch by the pool on Sunday for whoever is still standing, with departures through the afternoon. The weekend venues guide lists the estates built for it.

What the timeline decides

Transport. Guests leaving at 2am from a rural estate need a plan: shuttles to the nearest town on a timetable, or beds on site. Childcare. A 9pm dinner is late for small children; the venues with rooms let them sleep upstairs. Suppliers. Photographers price by the hour and the Spanish day is long; agree the finish time. The bar. An open bar from midnight to 3am is the line that grows fastest. The budget calculator prices it by the hour, and the questions guide covers the licence and the hours.

Questions couples ask us

What time do weddings start in Spain?

In summer, after six. A ceremony at 6.30 or 7pm sits in the last warm light, drinks run through the sunset, dinner starts after nine, and the party goes past midnight. Spring and autumn weddings start an hour or two earlier. A British-style 2pm ceremony is rare in Spain and, in July inland, inadvisable.

How long is a Spanish wedding?

A single day runs from the ceremony at about 6.30pm to the party's end at 2 or 3am, with dinner alone taking two to three hours. Many estates turn it into a weekend: a welcome dinner the evening before and a long lunch the day after, for the guests sleeping on site.

When does the party have to end?

Where the venue's licence says. 19 of the 55 venues we list state no curfew or no music curfew on record; the rest follow their municipality, often 2 or 3am outdoors and later inside. Rural estates are the most generous, town and seafront venues the strictest.

Does the ceremony have to be late?

In high summer, yes, for the heat and the light: at 4pm in July the sun is high and the terrace is 35 degrees. From late September the ceremony moves earlier, to 4 or 5pm, because the sun sets by eight. Plan the day backwards from sunset, which the table in this guide gives by month.
